Filigree Family Tree

What’s better than a great client? A great client, with great ideas.

I was recently approached to draw up and have a filigree family tree laser cut. With minimal time and production houses pressing to shut down for the holidays, I am relieved to say that we got the job done, and I am pretty stoked with the result. My first laser cut piece, and a happy client.  

Standing at just over a meter tall, this interlocking piece includes the families names across a number of the branches and the smell of freshly cut wood.

Life Size - Madiba Jive

A life size Madiba Jive, stoked! 

Jedd (Pictured) recently sent me a message saying that he had a surprise for me. Little did I know that I would have to wait until Madibas birthday to see it!

Madiba was built to his actual height and can also be seen on the Boomtown Facebook page with the crew on Mandela Day, doing their 67 minutes in celebration of a living legend.

A Gnu Named Adam

Or, A Gnu Named Adams & Adams, should i say...

I recently finished this rad little project for Adams & Adams - Attorneys. I was commissioned to produce 23 hand cut lapel pins and 45 3D paper wildebeest.

I really enjoyed working on this project and Adams & Adams were amazing to work with. Perfect clients and great people! The paper wildebeest came in 4 different colourways and 3 different sizes, ranging from 12cm to a triplex version standing 20cms tall. 

The product of a solid weeks worth of cutting was flat packed and joined Adams & Adams representatives at the INTA 2012 conference at the South African Embassy in Washington, USA. 

Stoked!

DESIGN INDABA EXPO 2012 - EMERGING CREATIVES

On Wednesday 29/02/12 I set up the Urb-Ski Paper Toys stand at the Design Indaba Expo as one of the Emerging Creatives, sponsored by Design Indaba and the Department of Arts & Culture. I would spend the next 4 days sharing my love for paper and designer paper toys from stand 35.05 :D

I had strategically positioned myself at the end of the Craft section of the expo space, but actually wish I had put myself in front of the Design Indaba Youth (DIY) Programme, which played host to a series of really rad workshops! I do like to play :D I was, however, really happy with my space and the great interaction and interest from the public... 

One of the most rewarding parts of the experience was the diversity of those interested in my work. From the children who ran down the aisle and bombed my stand, to designer toy collectors and the number of stern, more “experienced” looking faces that lit up as they realized what they were looking at! A really rewarding experience :D

Over the expo, I realized that the personal work I do, and the free downloads I make available to the public show what a commission or workshop can do for a client. The Urb-Ski Paper Toys series allows the public to interact, forming a sense of community, while developing their fine motor skills and creative vision in the process.

I have met some really amazing people and would like to thank Design Indaba and the Department of Arts and Culture for everything they have done in order to bring Urb-Ski Paper Toys to the Design Indaba Expo 2012!

EMERGING CREATIVES - FREE SKATE

The first Urb-Ski paper toy of the year is the Urb-Ski FREE SKATE :D An Emerging Creative, this skateboarder wants to free the streets of Cape Towns CBD!

Having recently moved down to Cape Town from Durban, I learnt that a new bylaw had made street skating in the city illegal. So much for supporting alternative transport, but hey, lets not get bitter.... Let’s Free Skate!
